What Type of Siding Should You Choose?

If you are looking to increase the value and curb appeal of your home there is nothing quite like renovating the exterior. The hardest decision when determining exterior siding is which type of product and appearance should you choose for your home? Depending on what you currently have for siding, whether it's vinyl siding, composite, metal or just painted wood, your options for new products are endless. Here are some things to consider during the decision making process.

There are four primary types of siding on the market today.

  1. Vinyl Siding
  2. Fiber Cement Siding
  3. Metal Siding - Steel & Aluminum
  4. Wood Siding

Vinyl Siding

This is probably the most common siding considering the price point and the fact it is maintenance free aside from occasional washing. Vinyl is very resilient but it is vulnerable to chipping and cracking.

Composite Siding aka Cement Board or Fiber Cement Siding

Composite is becoming more common in the midwest and it is a very durable exterior product. It does require a paint finish so this is not a maintenance free option.

Aluminum, Steel and Metal Siding

Aluminum and steel siding is another long-lasting surface that is easy to paint and easy to maintain. Usually a fresh coat of paint will bring this metal surface back to life. Finally we come to wood siding. Paining or staining is an absolute necessity for wood as it needs to be protected from the elements, if not it will rot and decay quickly. Is the wood soft and splintered? Can you see the grain on the back side of peeling areas? If so, then replacement might be necessary. The same is true if your siding appears to be warped or buckled.

Wood Siding

There are many varieties of wood siding available and it's been around a long time. Depending on the look you are going for whether it be a vertical wide lap appearance or a horizontal narrow lap appearance, you can choose many styles. Some siding may require painting or staining while others are naturally resistant to weathering.

The exterior of your home is the first thing that people see so it is quite important to have it in the best condition possible. No mater what type of exterior your home has, updating and replacing old siding can make it appear like new again.
